Recap of Annual Alumni Weekend – May 29 – 31, 2009
Nineteenth Annual Sigma Chi Golf Outing

By Tom Giacalone '88, 2009 Sigma Chi Golf Outing Committee Chairman

We are just coming off our annual 'weekend bender', otherwise known as our Annual Alumni Weekend. Based upon early feedback - it was another huge success, with over 117 Sigs, significant others and friends returning to celebrate friendship and good times. The cornerstone of the weekend revolves around our 19th Annual Golf Tournament, which continues to be the largest of all fraternity alumni golf tournaments at Penn State. The weather was outstanding, which kept the spirits of all high in anticipation for the weekend's events.

Things got underway at our Friday event which returned to the venerable Penn State White Course, with a shotgun start at 10:30 AM. This is a combination of individual and team events for golfers of any skill level. The team winners for both the Friday Yellow Ball and Beagle were Derek Reid, Jim Beam, Mike Manning, and Chip Thome. Low Gross was Mark Sixour and Low Net was Merrell Ashley.

Saturday was our traditional team event for the weekend, with a 9:00 AM shotgun start at the Penn State Blue Course. The Low Gross team (Nittany Lion Statues) was Nick Andrews, Bob Brugler, Mark Sixour and Ben Swift. The Tacky Jackets for Low Net were presented to Derek Reid, Jim Beam, Mike Manning, and Chip Thome, who had a clean sweep for all of the weekend team events. Full results from both days of this year's event along with pictures, will be posted on our website in the next week.

But what tops off the weekend is getting together back at the Chapter House for our Steak Bake dinner. This offered a chance for all to socialize and recount the events of the weekend. That evening, special Sigma Chi national recognition was paid to the House Corporation for winning the award for top House Corporation of the Year, Dave Kline as Chapter Advisor of the Year, and recognition of Jim Lundy being named as a Constantine Sig. Significant Sigs Ted Junker and John Powell were in attendance and Brian Vogel was recognized with a Sigma Chi Military Service Recognition Pin.
We want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who came to this year's event – and to encourage those of you who have not made the trip yet or it has been a while, to mark June 4-6, 2010 on your calendar now for the 20th Annual Alumni Weekend and Golf Outing. Our tournament will fall on the Penn State Alumni Reunion Weekend (Classes of 1965, 1960 and earlier) as well, so we will be sure to set room blocks aside early at several hotels for next year.
